In case this happens again (where you have a single article elicit hundreds of responses), I would still suggest responding to as many as possible. Although, I would not necessarily say you need to rush to do so. You could even respond over a matter of weeks because that is a pretty daunting amount of work.

On a positive note, my guess is that if you did respond to all those comments, you would have a very high conversion rate of commenters becoming followers. It also helps with SEO (Google loves high engagement/quality responses from readers). This may help your article also generate some substantial additional external traffic over time.

Also worth noting, I still try to reply to every comment, but fall short. While I’ve never had a single article get so many comments, I do get a fair amount from the growing back catalogue of articles I’ve built. Don’t beat yourself up if you can’t keep up with them all. Yours is truly an exceptional case!
